What is Little Literates?

A comfortable place

I love children!  Children learn best when they feel loved and secure.  I help provide that environment.  Lessons take place in my home or at a library. We have a bright, comfortable home that enables you, me, and your child to have a fun and productive lesson while putting your child at ease.

I've recently started teaching reading lessons online using Google Classroom which gives you the option of having the lessons in the comfort of your own home.  You can choose which option is right for you and your child.

Before you come

I'll take time to talk with you and become familiar with your situation and needs.  I will make a preliminary general plan and a detailed plan for your first visit, specifically designed to meet your needs.

The first visit

The purpose of the first visit is two-fold: Assessment and Excitement.  I'll take some time to get to know your child and help him/her feel at ease. Based on our discussion ahead of time and the plan I made, I'll assess your child's strengths and weaknesses while engaging him/her in some activities that will build confidence and excitement about continuing with the program and his/her ultimate success as a reader.

Fun learning

I teach your child to read, making the reading fun and exciting.  We complete a series of reading lessons.  After each lesson your child gets a prize from my "Treasure Chest" (subject to your approval) and we do other things to keep the lessons rewarding and fun!

Not just for your child

Part of my vision is to help parents help their children.  While here, you will learn effective ways to encourage your child to read and to comprehend.  Over the past 15 years, I have taught many children to read and had much success!  My own children (6 of them) excel in school because they started Kindergarten as proficient readers.  I will help you create a similar legacy in your own home.

Set your children up for success in school and teach them to read! Your child will be confident and feel smart because he/she can read well!  Give him/her the gift of reading!  It is one of the most important gifts you can give your child!

The following is more detailed information about the program I use:

TEACH YOUR CHILD TO READ IN 100 EASY LESSONS…is a modification and extension of DISTAR® (Direct Instruction System for Teaching, Achievement and Remediation). Featured on PrimeTime Live and 20/20, the Direct Instruction approach was proven by a United States Office of Education commissioned evaluation to have the most successful beginning reading program when compared to all other approaches used in schools. Children easily move step–by–step with phonics (sounds for letters) and learn the essential skills (left out of other phonics programs) to blend the sounds into words. Built on this unique phonics foundation, children quickly start to read those words in fully illustrated stories. This book was designed to be user–friendly for parents, grandparents, tutors or others who want to teach young (3– to 6–year old) non–readers. The book contains 100 twenty–minute lessons that are clearly color–coded and scripted, so that both you and the child you are teaching can be successful. How successful? After kids complete the 100 lessons they read on a solid second grade level. Although the book alone can be used, Dr. Phyllis Haddox, co–author, has also developed supplemental materials—training video, training audio, flashcards, and full–sized sounds sheets.
